Over a century of Buckeyes Success
Ohio State University has one of the strongest Division I NCAA football teams in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference. Ever since the team formed in 1890, the Buckeyes have been a popular team that delivered some of the strongest seasons in college football history. The team is recognized for having won an impressive eight national championships, 30 conference championships including 37 Big Ten titles, seven division championships, 10 undefeated seasons, and six perfect seasons. squad, with their first game resulting in a 20-14 victory over Ohio
Wesleyan University on May 3, 1890. The team was an independent team
from 1890 to 1901 where they joined the Ohio Athletic Conference for
the 1902 season as a charter member. The Buckeyes won two conference
championships for the OAC before joining the Big Ten Conference in
1912. The team’s first big break came in 1942 when head coach Paul
Brown won the program’s first national championship.
But this success was followed by a difficult period following World War II when the Buckeyes went through three separate coaches until 1951 when they hired Woody Hayes to coach. Hayes’ appointment to the position led to a return to form as Ohio State won over 200 games, 13 Big Ten championships, and five national championships, as well as four Rose Bowl, wins in eight appearances. After Hayes’ dismissal in 1978, the team went through three head coaches: Earle Bruce, John Cooper, and Jim Tressel. During this period, the team had several conference championships and their seventh national championship under Tressel, as well as several more Big Ten championships and Bowl appearances.
The team’s successes didn’t stop there, however, as beneath Urban Meyer’s tenure as head coach, the team went 12-0 in his first season and set a school record with 24 consecutive victories. Day started his career in football when he attended Manchester Central High School. He played as a quarterback and defensive back and was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year for his senior year success. He then attended the University of New Hampshire where he played for the team underneath then-offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Day was a phenomenal player, setting four career records at UNH, including completion percentage and touchdowns.
After his on-the-field career, he moved on to coaching starting as an offensive coordinator for Temple in 2012 and an offensive coordinator for Boston College from 2013 to 2014. The following year, Day was trusted to serve as quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles on January 22, 2015. Day’s association with the Buckeyes began when he was hired in 2017 to replace co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck, only to be later promoted in 2018 to the role of offensive coordinator and primary play-caller. In August of that year, Day was promoted to acting Head Coach when Urban Meyer was placed on administrative leave for domestic violence allegations, winning all three games played during Meyer’s absence. Day’s image and stellar performance during the period made him an easy choice to replace Meyer after his retirement after the 2019 Rose Bowl, making the Buckeyes Day’s first full-time head coaching job.
Day is a product of Chip Kelly’s leadership and his proven record with the Buckeyes during last season and the current season shows that he has the makings of a great coach for the program.
